  • The son of a noted engraver, John William Hill (1812–1879) was born in London and brought to America as a young child. During the early years of his career he was a topographic artist for the New York State Geological Survey. Later, influenced by the English aesthetician John Ruskin, Hill created exquisite plein air nature studies and became America’s leading artist of the Pre-Raphaelite movement.
